Osteoporosis & Fragility Fractures

Osteoporosis is often called the “silent condition” because it weakens bones gradually without obvious symptoms - until a fracture happens. Many patients only discover they have low bone density after sustaining a fracture from a minor fall or even simple daily activities. Fragility fractures commonly affect the hip, spine, and wrist, particularly in older adults.

Bone health naturally declines with age, especially in postmenopausal women, but factors such as nutritional deficiencies, lack of physical activity, hormonal changes, and certain medical conditions can accelerate bone loss. Early diagnosis through bone density testing plays a crucial role in prevention.

Management of osteoporosis is not limited to medication alone. A comprehensive plan includes calcium and vitamin D optimization, weight-bearing exercises, fall prevention strategies, and lifestyle modification. When fractures occur, prompt and structured treatment is essential to prevent long-term disability.

Preventing the first fracture is always the goal. With early intervention and ongoing monitoring, osteoporosis can be managed effectively, helping patients maintain independence and reduce the risk of serious injury.
